This new Trojan Horse can be found in pirated copies of Apple’s iWork ‘09 application suite, which has been downloaded over 20,000 times, according to Intego’s numbers. Microsoft is currently readying the release of Internet Explorer 8 RC1 for early next week, company sources indicate. Have you ever wondered why Microsoft renamed the Add/Remove Programs (XP and earlier) control panel applet to Programs and Features (Vista onwards)? It's possible that Microsoft is considering its own version of something comparable to Linux package management systems. For those that don't use Linux, think of it like a Windows Update for all your software. Such a system could completely revolutionize how users interact with software on Windows, not to mention the security advantages of only letting users install software deemed safe (which in turn could cause privacy concerns, of course). Microsoft recently sent out a survey to Windows 7 beta participants, asking them various questions regarding "a single place for finding and managing updates for the programs on my PC." Apple exposed its complete lack of interest in building a stripped down, voice-only iPhone or a Mac-based netbook during its fiscal first quarter conference call Wednesday afternoon. The actual release candidate build has now been delayed till March. The RTM build of Service Pack 2, which was originally scheduled for April, has been delayed until sometime in Q2, 2009. That means a launch in either May or June, barring any further delays. The company's response is raising troubling questions about the security of such processing centers and laws ostensibly intended to protect consumers in general. Millions of credit cards per month, primarily used in restaurants, could have been exposed to hackers who broke into the Heartland Payment Systems processing center network, in an incident the company said Tuesday took place the previous week. Heartland began looking into the problem after it received reports from MasterCard and Visa about reports of suspicious activity. In addition, the company advised cardholders to check their monthly statements for suspicious activity, because the potentially stolen data could be used to generate new credit cards. However, because it said there was no personally identifiable data such as Social Security numbers in the data, cardholders didn't have to worry about identity theft. That's the official story. Giving system builders a little breathing room, Microsoft has decided to bend the already extended deadline for the availability of the OEM versions of Windows XP. While Microsoft will still be taking orders for Windows XP only until January 31st, 2009, it will ship said orders until May 30th (2009), thus enabling manufacturers to avoid overstocking the seven year old operating system. Mac support and discussion forums have been blazing away since Tuesday's announcements, with users of FireWire video gear, musical equipment, and peripherals bewailing the absence of FireWire from the lower-end MacBook. The port is still present in FireWire 800 form on the MacBook Pro; FireWire 400 is no longer offered. Microsoft has launched a new program resulting from its research department: Microsoft Office Labs, Speed Launch. As its name indicates, Speed Launch is a small program that should allow the user to accelerate the launch of applications.

There was some early confusion today over just what "shrunk" in this latest slate of .NET Framework releases, but after going through the releases ourselves, we discovered what some Microsoft spokespersons meant to say in the beginning: The latest SP1 adds a new concept called the .NET Framework Client Profile, which enables an application's setup routine to include only those features it may require to serve as a .NET client, on a Windows platform where .NET Framework is not automatically installed -- for instance, XP SP2 or SP3, or Windows Server 2003. In short, it's a reduced profile for client-only applications that don't require the entire .NET to be distributed with them, and don't have the luxury of the entire .NET pre-installed. With Mozilla Labs in the news recently, even if it's for bold ideas that have yet to find their way to source code, the organization is taking advantage of this added attention to float an idea for a possible future Firefox permutation: What if instant messaging, RSS, and other concurrent textual feeds such as Twitter, were embedded in the Web browser in such a way that any kind of personal message could be made to appear through a single channel? In May of this year Microsoft introduced Windows 7, the next iteration of a Windows client. This operating system is the first peak at a larger version of touch computing. Microsoft Research has developed a prototype which relies on an infrared system.
